what should I wear in a belly dance class?

Anything you would wear at the gym or yoga class. Anything that makes you feel comfortable and allows you to move freely.

do I need a costume or hip scarf for the class?

Absolutely not! If you have a hip scarf or belly dance belt, you are welcome to wear it, but they are not necessary.

do i need special shoes for belly dance classes?

Traditionally, belly dance is practiced barefoot. However, to avoid injuries, it's recommended to wear any sort of flat dance shoes or sneakers. Professional belly dancers may wear high heels for performances, but not in class. High heel shoes shift your weight and body perception.

P.S. For classes at La Vida, we recommend that you wear sneakers, sketchers, or jazz shoes (no high heels, no pointe shoes).

will i gain weight or increase belly size if I practice belly dance?

This is a common myth related to belly dancing but it's absolutely not true! On the contrary, belly dance can help you stay in shape as it's a cardio exercise that also strengthen your muscles, especially arms, calves, and abdomen. Gaining or losing weight is mostly related to your diet and genetics.

do i need to be skinny to become a belly dancer?

Of course not! Belly Dance is one of the most democratic dances, accepting all body sizes and shapes, and it's a dance for all ages. If you decide to become a professional dancer and perform in restaurants and hotels, depending on where you are performing they may have a preference in terms of costume, hair style, or physical type. However, learning and practicing belly dance is for everyone!
